Klaus Röder, Carpe Diem Yacht DesignKlaus Röder, a graduate of the the Southampton Institute (Yacht and Powercraft Design), is the owner of the Carpe Diem Yacht Design firm in Tutzing, Germany. Before enrolling in the Institute, Klaus learned boat building as a trainee in a German shipyard, and is thus especially well prepared for the close cooperation with boat builders, which is a prerequisite for a successful end product. Today, this young designer has some 15 designs of sailing and motor boats in the water. Klaus likes to design with wood -- mahogany on the outside, teak and other, light woods in the interior. He won the first prize in the category "The ideal 10m cruising yacht" in "Yacht of the year 2000" competition, organized by the German sailing magazine Yacht. His design (left, click on thumbnail for larger image) received praise for its "intelligent details and attractive retro design." The yacht is being built in Turkey. Klaus is a long-time MultiSurf user. He takes advantage of the program's parametric capabilities, makes extensive use of components and puts to work the program's many other rich features, especially the scalability of models, and all the tools that make it possible to indicate and visualize the curvature qualities of curves and surfaces. Another handsome Carpe Diem design is this 45 square meter cruiser built by Bootswerft Glas (left). The mahogany strip-planked boat is a beauty inside and out. More pictures and details may be found on the boatyard's site. This is also a very fast boat, so fast indeed that it carries a four point handicap in its class. Abraxas (right) was designed for a Swiss client to be used on the Lake of Constance. She features a retractable keel and carbon rigging. Klaus' web pages include many more designs, including catamarans and power boats. We are pleased to see how skillfully this designer is combining his flair for design with the latest technological advancements. Dipl.Ing. Klaus Röder Previously featured designers: |
